Spring Cleaning Your Insurance Policies: A Fresh Start to a Secure Year

Spring brings the perfect opportunity to refresh and reorganize, not just your home, but your insurance policies too! While we often associate spring cleaning with decluttering, it’s also an ideal time to review and update your coverage to ensure you’re properly protected.

Why Spring Cleaning Your Insurance Policies is the Perfect Fresh Start

As seasons change, so do our lives. Major life events such as buying a home, getting married, having children, or changing jobs can impact insurance needs. An annual review ensures your policies align with your current situation. Spring’s sense of renewal makes it the perfect time to assess your coverage and potentially save money.

Reviewing Homeowners or Renters Insurance Policies

The first step is to access your coverage needs.

If you’ve recently renovated your home, added expensive electronics, or purchased valuable jewelry in the past year, your current homeowners or renters’ insurance policy may not reflect these changes. A quick review with your agent ensures you have adequate coverage for your home’s value and possessions.

The second step is to check for available discounts you may qualify for. Many insurance carriers offer discounts for home improvements such as security systems, updated electrical work, new roofs, plumbing upgrades, or energy-efficient enhancements. If you’ve made any changes, contact your agent to see if you qualify for savings.

The third step is reviewing home inventory. If you have purchased high value items or electronics, jewelry, or fire arms you, make a note of the estimated worth. This step is crucial in case of a future claim.

Spring Cleaning Your Auto Insurance Policy for Better Coverage

Reassess Your Driving Habits.  If you’re driving less due to remote work or lifestyle changes, you might qualify for a lower premium. Many insurance companies offer discounts for lower mileage, so updating your provider on your driving habits can lead to savings.

Ensure your current auto insurance policy provides sufficient protection. Consider whether you need comprehensive or collision coverage, especially if your car is older. If your vehicle is financed, make sure your policy meets the lender’s requirements.

Ask your agent to shop your rate if you find yourself with an extensive increase. Most auto rates are currently increasing for various reasons. Agencies such as Schirmer Insurance Group write with more than one insurance carrier and can quote you with other insurance carriers.

Review Business Insurance for a Secure Year

For business owners, spring is an excellent time to review liability, property, and workers’ compensation insurance policies. Changes in business operations, staffing, or revenue can impact coverage needs. Updating policies ensure you’re not underinsured or overpaying for unnecessary coverage.

Bundles for Maximize Savings

Many insurance providers offer discounts for bundling multiple policies, such as home and auto insurance. Or auto insurance combined with an umbrella policy. If you’re not already taking advantage of these savings, it’s worth discussing options with your provider.

Schedule an insurance check-up with your agent

While reviewing your policies, consider scheduling an appointment with your insurance agent. They can provide valuable insights, ensure you have adequate coverage, and identify potential cost savings.

Final Thoughts: Take Action Now

Spring cleaning your insurance isn’t just about saving money, it’s about ensuring you are prepared for the unexpected and protecting your financial investments. Taking the time to review your policies now can prevent financial stress down the road. Make this annual review a habit and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have the right coverage in place.

Start today! Take out your policies, evaluate your needs, and reach out to your insurance agent to make necessary adjustments. Your future self will thank you!

Loved the idea of “spring cleaning” insurance policies! It’s a great reminder to reassess coverage. Quick question—what’s the best way to spot unnecessary coverages without risking underinsurance?

Thanks for the great question. Check for policy overlaps, evaluate the deductibles for the clients. Did the client downsize anywhere with personal property. Are there additional discounts that can be applied. What is the cost of construction material at the time of writing the policy. There are so many factors to account for.
